About the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Library

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Library serves as the reception desk for using materials in the faculty's dedicated closed stacks.
The dedicated stacks of the Tokyo Metropolitan University Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences are located in Building 5. They contain about 600,000 volumes of books and journals, primarily in the fields of humanities and social sciences.

About the distinction between your own department and other departments

Individuals affiliated with the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Regarding the use of materials held in your own department (*1), these are managed by each department, so follow the acceptable use policy of your affiliated department. However, when your own department is closed, you can use materials through the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Library.
  • Use of materials from other departments (*2) or use by first-year undergraduate students are done through the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Library.
  • All requests of materials held by the Department of Sociology are available for use through the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Library.

(*1) Own department: The major subject department within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences with which you are affiliated
(*2) Other departments: Departments other than your own

Individuals affiliated with other faculties, non-degree students, former faculty members, graduate school alumni, undergraduate alumni, Premium College students, Open University instructors and students
  • All requests of use must be arranged through the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Library.

How to use

Members of the university

Faculty members, researchers, research students, fellows, graduate students
  • Borrowing: 5 books, 3 weeks
  • Entry into the stacks: Allowed
    Present your identification at the reception desk and complete the check-in procedures. You will be given a card key for the stacks of the department you want to use. To borrow or copy materials, bring them to the reception desk and complete the necessary procedures.
  • Browsing: Allowed
  • Copying: Allowed
  • Temporary taking-out: Allowed (until closing time)
    Complete the procedures at the service desk, as they will be holding your identification.
Undergraduate students
  • Borrowing: 5 books, 2 weeks
  • Entry into the stacks: Not allowed (Entry is allowed when your own department is closed)
  • Browsing: Allowed
  • Copying: Allowed
  • Temporary taking-out: Allowed (until closing time)
    Complete the procedures at the service desk, as they will be holding your identification.
Non-degree students, Premium College students, Open University instructors and students
  • Borrowing: 5 books, 2 weeks
  • Entry into the stacks: Not allowed
  • Browsing: Allowed
  • Copying: Allowed
  • Temporary taking-out: Allowed (until closing time)
    Complete the procedures at the service desk, as they will be holding your identification.
     
About use
  • All materials are uniformly taken from the stacks. Please arrive at the library with plenty of time to spare.
  • Note that some materials may be unavailable for use even if they are displayed in the OPAC as being held by the library.
  • When you want to confirm availability in advance, contact the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Library.
Renewing(Extending the Period of borrowing)
  • You can extend the due date once with permission from the department to manage materials. Bring the materials and complete the procedures at the service desk.
  • Extension is not available for materials past their due date.
Penalty for overdue items
  • If you have overdue materials, you cannot borrow new materials (viewing and temporary taking-out are permitted).

Individuals outside the university

Former faculty, graduate school alumni
  • Borrowing: 5 books, 3 weeks
  • Entry into the stacks: Allowed
