General Public

Library Admission

 

Graduate Students and Full-Time Teaching Staff of Affiliated Universities (Chuo University, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies and Tokyo University of Pharmacy and Life Sciences)

Take ID confirming your affiliation with an affiliated university (student ID, faculty ID, etc.) to the counter when entering the library. Check with your own university library for service details.

Individuals with Referrals from Libraries of which they belong  Institutions

Browsing and copying is permitted for predesignated materials only. Contact us in advance through the library of which you belong regarding the date and details of your visit.
Take the referral letter and ID confirming your affiliation with an affiliated university (student ID, faculty ID, etc.) to the counter when entering the library.

Individuals Living or Working in Tokyo

Healthcare Professionals (including individuals involved in education and research at medical institutions and medical research institutions)

Only the Health Sciences Library may be used. Take ID confirming your status as a healthcare professional (health insurance card, faculty ID from medical institution, employment certificate, etc.) to the counter when entering the library.
Note: Materials cannot be borrowed.

Attention to Library Users

  • Please be quiet inside the library.
  • Use library materials, equipment and facilities with care.
  • Do not eat or drink inside the library. (Excluding hydration.)
  • Do not distribute printed materials or engage in solicitation inside the library without permission.
  • Keep articles of value with you at all times.
  • Smoking is prohibited inside the library.
  • Do not talk on your phones, smart phones, inside the library.
  • There is no parking for library users. Visitors are not allowed to come to the library by car.
  • Please refrain from entering the museum if you are not in good physical condition.
  • Please wash your hands and disinfect your fingers frequently.
  • Refrain from behavior that may cause a nuisance to others.

Information on Library Use for Tokyo Residents

This information is for individuals living or working in Tokyo who are at least 18 years of age (high school students excluded) and do not belong to another university or learning institution.

The condition is that you will be using the library’s materials for studies or research. You are not permitted to use the library solely to rest in the chairs or use the equipment (computers, audio-visual equipment, etc.).

  • Note: Use by Tokyo residents is partially restricted in order to give precedence to supporting the educational and research activities of university members. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
Library Admission
Single-day use
  • You may browse and copy the materials.
  • Fill out the application for single-day use and take it to the counter along with an ID confirming your address (driver’s license, health insurance card, etc.). Individuals living outside Tokyo but working within the city should also present an ID confirming the address of their place of work (such as a work ID).
Registered use
  • Materials may also be borrowed in addition to browsing and copying (excluding the Health Sciences Library).
  • Fill out the application for a library card and take it to the counter along with an ID confirming your address (driver’s license, health insurance card, etc.). Individuals living outside Tokyo but working within the city should also present an ID confirming the address of their place of work (such as a work ID). You will be issued a Tokyo Resident Library Card.
    • Notes: Cards cannot be issued at the Health Sciences Library.
    • Notes: Please arrive at least 30 minutes before closing time.
  • First-time registration costs 300 yen. We do not have change, so please bring coins.
  • Tokyo Resident Library Cards are valid for one year. When renewing, you will need to present an ID confirming your address (individuals living outside Tokyo but working within the city should also present an ID confirming the address of their place of work).
  • Come to the counter if there are changes to your registration details after the card is issued or if your card is lost or destroyed.
    Note: There is a 300 yen fee for reissuing library cards.
Borrowing of Materials

A Tokyo Resident Library Card is required. Please make procedures at the counter.
Borrowing periods cannot be extended. or reserved. You cannot make reservation of materials. Materials at the libraries of other campuses cannot be shipped to the library.

  • Notes: Magazines (excluding bound Japanese magazines at the Central Library) and reference only materials cannot be borrowed.
  • Notes: B1/2F materials, "student" materials, and audiovisual materials (except attached materials) owned by the Central Library cannot be borrowed.
  • Notes: Audio-visual materials at the Systems Design Library cannot be borrowed.
  • Notes: Materials at the Health Sciences Library cannot be borrowed.
Return

Borrowed materials may be returned at any campus library. After opening hours, return materials using the book drop outside the library.

Late Penalty

New materials cannot be borrowed if other materials are not returned by the deadline. You will be prohibited from borrowing materials again for the number of days you were late. 

Loss/Damage of Materials

If you lose or damage materials, you will be required, in principle, to replace them. Notify the library immediately.

Reference

The librarian will answer questions regarding research. Inquire at the counter.
